单数可数名词前为何没不定冠词a

问题句：We sit around a fire or lie in bed.

请问该句后半部分的 lie in bed 的 bed 前不应有 a 吗——lie in a bed？

另，You never feel the transition from night to day 中，night 与 day 皆为单数，为什么前处皆无 a 呢？

inbed 中的 bed 已不是表示“床”，而是表示“床的功能（睡觉）”，不可数，故不需要冠词。

至于 from night to day，依据英语习惯，from…to…连接“成对”的名词时，一般不需要冠词。
