简单地说，所谓否定疑问句就是指谓语部分为否定形式的疑问句。这种句的否定词 not通常放在主语之后。如：
Am I not late? 我没迟到吧?
Is he not coming? 他不来了吗?
Do you not believe me? 你不相信我?
Are you not Mr Smith? 你不是史密斯先生吗?
Did he not invite you out? 他没邀请你出去吗?
但在口语或非正式文体中，一般使用缩略式，与助动词（或系动词、情态动词）一块置于句首。如：
Aren’t you ready? 你还没有筹备怎么样?
Don’t you feel the house shaking? 你没感觉到房屋在摇晃吗?
Don’t you care what happens to him? 你难道不关心他出啥事了吗?
Isn’t that a rather mad idea? 难道那不是一个非常疯狂的主意？

对否定疑问句的回答，假如不直接用yes和no，则可依据需要回答就好了。如：
A：Can’t you come a little earlier? 你不可以早一点点来吗？
B：I live too far away, you know. 我住得太远了，这你是了解的。
但，若是用yes和no来回答否定的通常疑问句，则千万不要受汉语的影响而用错或理解错（特别不可以“一一对应”地翻译）。如：
A：Don’t you like the book? 你不喜欢这本书吗?
B：Yes, I do. 不，我喜欢。
C：No, I don’t. 是的，我不喜欢。
A：He hasn’t come back, has he? 他还没有回来，是吗?
B：Yes, he has. 不，他回来了。
C：No, he hasn’t. 是的，他还没有回来。
另外，还应该注意yes必须要与一定的“简略答语”搭配，no必须要与否定的“简略答语”搭配，不然就可能出错。如：
